Hi! This looks like a great project to present to our Knit & Kvetch group at our Hillel! What type of yarn would you suggest we use? It appears that it needs to be black, but should we use or avoid a particular fiber?

That'd be great! It needs to be black, worsted weight and machine washable.
Superwash wool is the best (think Cascade 220 Superwash, Valley Yarns Valley Superwash, KnitPicks Swish Worsted)but a wool/acrylic mix is ok too -- e.g., Lion Brand Wool-Ease, Plymouth Encore Worsted, Patons Decor etc.
