Hats Now!

Hi everyone,

Due to the terrible situation in which we find ourselves, I'm getting lots of messages from people who want to make and send hats to soldiers. I'm not doing that anymore, but I have found 2 places who have agreed to receive and distribute hats to soldiers, places that I know personally and feel very comfortable recommending.

Thank you for your desire to help in this difficult time, may our army succeed, and may Israel flourish!

1. The Michael Levin Base for Lone Soldiers

A wonderful Jerusalem center that helps lone soldiers, as well as young women from abroad doing national service, in myriad ways. You can mail your hats (knit according to pattern please! see sidebar) to:

The Michael Levin Base

4 Eliyahu Mani St.

Jerusalem 9432526

(tel. +972-50-257-0035)

If you have any questions, you can WhatsApp Bonnie Rosenbaum at +972-50-257-0035

More contact info and details about the center can be found here: https://themichaellevinbase.org

2. The Gourmet Yarn Shop

Orly of The Gourmet Yarn Shop has always been an enthusiastic supporter of this project, telling people about it and giving them the pattern, as well as serving as a collection point for finished hats and periodically mailing me what she'd collected. She's super professional, can sell you the yarn you might need for this project, and can answer all your knitting-related questions. She will be distributing hats to regular army combat units. The address is:

Is there a crochet version of this hat pattern? Thanks!

CHANNAH said...

Hi Deb! There used to be a crochet pattern but the truth is that the crochet hats have been very unpopular -- they are, because of the nature of crochet, much bulkier and less flexible than the knit hats. The knit hats are smaller and can fit almost any size head. They can also be worn under a helmet. So we're asking people to make only knit hats please. Thanks for checking in.

I remembered your project from years ago and in this difficult time for Israel looked up the pattern again to see if it was still possible to knit for the IDF soldiers. So I am delighted to see your post. sending you love from the Netherlands. Praying for Israel

I have been following the tragedy in Israel closely and sad about the horrors that have taken place. I remembered the hatsproject from years ago and looked the pattern up on ravelry, only to learn you stopped this coordinating the project a few years ago. I am delighted to see your post and that there again is a way to help with knitting hats for IDF soldiers. Much love from the Netherlands. Praying for Israel.

Thank you for you post. Sending love from Boston. One question -- can plain stockinette hats be knit for soldiers or does it need to be a ribbed hat?

CHANNAH said...

Yes, the ribbing is what enables it to fit almost all head sizes so it's an important part of the pattern. Thanks for asking!

Where can we find the knitting pattern?

If you're looking at this on your computer (which I recommend), it's in the column on the left. If you're reading on your phone, the links to the pattern will appear after the blog post. You can also find them on the crafter's site Ravelry by searching for 2023 Soldier Hats.

I noticed you say to use black yarn but two of the photos show deep gray. It's so difficult for me to knit in black. Will the army accept charcoal gray?

CHANNAH said...

Hi Cynthia,
I'm not sure which pictures you're looking at, but suspect that what you're seeing is more a matter of the lighting in the photos than the actual hat color. They should be black, the army does not accept charcoal gray -- sorry.
all the best,
Channah Koppel

I am trying to find the pattern with no success. Is it possible for you to email it to me?

If you are looking at this post on your phone, the patterns appear at the end of the blog post. If you are looking on your computer -- which is a little more convenient -- the patterns for download are on the left side of the screen. If you can't get to it either of those ways, email me at kovakoppel@gmail.com

I am so happy to be doing “Hats for Soldiers”. We just delivered to the Michael Levin Lone Soldier Center (8) Eight hats and we keep on knitting. Bring them all home safe. They need us more that ever.
